Artist Statement

Versialles.jpgIn 2006 I lived near London, England, and taught high school photography in an international American school. I became mesmerized by master photographer books in my photo classroom library and was particularly drawn to the 20th century French street photographers of Paris.

Since then, both consciously and unconsciously, I have incorporated their style into my own work which is characterized by use of standard lenses, sharp focus, disuse of flash, and monochrome printing. I usually carry a 35 mm film camera and a digital SLR when I travel. My film is always in monochrome and my digital is always shot in color. I convert a lot of digital images to monochrome, but do like color, and keep it when it is necessary to convey the mood of the image.

The bulk of my work includes photos of England, Scotland, Italy and France. I also have images of other European countries, and since returning to the US, I have added images of North Carolina and South Carolina.

I print and frame my own work in my home studio located in Raleigh, NC. My work consists of both archival museum-grade ink jet prints and traditional gelatin silver prints.

I continue to work as a freelance photographer, designer, webmaster and illustrator. My commercial photography interests include environmental portraiture and architectural photography. I also enjoy painting and printmaking and web design and marketing.
